Meet our Board Members

Mike Gilroy

I started fly fishing in Virginia. I purchased my first rod with monies earned from caddying. I taught myself how to cast and fish on the Shenandoah River, mostly while cutting classes from high school. Caught lots of fish and developed lots of bad casting habits. No Youtube or DVDs in the 60’s.

After retiring from the Navy, I ended up in Washington State and expanded my flyfishing adventures on the rivers of the northwest. I loved chasing Steelheads, Dolly Varden and Salmon. Skagit, Sauk, Stillaguamish, and Naches are some of my favorite waters. While in the northwest, I went further into the abyss and got into spey casting. Today that remains my favorite way to spend time on the rivers. Other fishing

adventures include trips to Texas, Louisiana, Wyoming, Utah, and Spain.

I retired from professional life in 2016 to San Diego. Not my first choice, but my beautiful wife explained Spanish grandmother math to me so here at am. Go Padres! I was surprised to learn about San Diego Fly Fishers (SDFF). I jumped in, up to the top of my waders. Being in SDFF has been so fun and rewarding. I particularly enjoy seeing how the club has evolved and the new active members who show up and get involved. It energizes me.

As a result of being involved with SDFF, I have had some great trips in California and Montana. I have learned a lot from generous club members and look forward to building more memories on the water. Flyfishing represents a wonderful gift in my life and I love sharing it with others. Hope to see you at a meeting or on the water.
