Tim Huckaby is the President of the San Diego Fly Fishers and a known leader in the fly‑fishing community. An accomplished writer, Tim has published numerous articles across leading outdoor magazines and maintains a widely read fly‑fishing blog at TimHuckaby.com.
A professional fly tier, Tim is known for his custom hand‑crafted patterns, which he sells through his website. As a licensed professional guide, he is listed on one of only two permits authorized to guide in the Golden Trout Wilderness of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California SEE MORE
Mark Hedderson​​ was born in Chula Vista and also worked there for 30 years as a high school English teacher (even though English is not my best subject, which as a student, was ditching class and poaching bass at Lake Otay). I've lived in La Mesa now for 25 years and it's only a ten minute drive to Lake Murray, which has become my default home water, that and kayak fishing Sweetwater Marsh in South Bay. I loved fishing as soon as I was old enough to tag along with my big brother, but didn't come around to fly fishing until 2008. Had I known it was so fun and relatively easy I would have been on board sooner. SEE MORE
​Whitney Wilkinson
I learned to fly fish from my father when i was about 12, on the headwaters of the White River in Colorado. I was a wonderful private fishing lodge with about 9 miles of river. It was all dry fly only and absolutely amazing fishing catching 50+ fish everyday. When I went to college I put fly fishing on hold due to studies and later work. After spending nearly 30 years in the retail sporting goods industry and getting married and raising 3 daughters, I retired and re-discovered my passion. SEE MORE
Mike Gilroy
I started fly fishing in Virginia. I purchased my first rod with monies earned from caddying. I taught myself how to cast and fish on the Shenandoah River, mostly while cutting classes from high school. Caught lots of fish and developed lots of bad casting habits. No Youtube or DVDs in the 60’s.
After retiring from the Navy, I ended up in Washington State and expanded my flyfishing adventures on the rivers of the northwest. I loved chasing Steelheads, Dolly Varden and Salmon. Skagit, Sauk, Stillaguamish, and Naches are some of my favorite waters. SEE MORE
Maim Kim here. I started fly fishing at the beginning of 2025, and it’s quickly become a real blessing in my life and a way for me to bond with my brother, Aram. I’m also fairly new to San Diego and love how fly fishing brings together nature and this great community—getting to know the people in this club is my favorite part of fly fishing. Well, apart from actually catching the fish! Behind the scenes, I help with tech and digital projects—supporting Mark on the Finny Facts newsletter, creating materials like the Stroud Annual Banquet flyer, and pitching in wherever needed. Gary Strawn, Conservation Chairman
After a career in the Navy and another in aerospace, I got involved in water ecology through my passion for fly fishing, and now serve as Chairman of the Water Quality Control Board for the San Diego Region. In California, these Regional Boards are responsible for implementing and enforcing the Federal and State Clean Water Acts, protecting our local streams, bays and beaches. That fits perfectly with our San Diego Fly Fishers Motto: "Cleaner Water, Brighter Streams, Better Fishing"!
As theConservation Chairman I have tried to focus our donations and volunteer efforts locally, such as replenishment of white sea bass and halibut in our bays, and restoring our native trout habitats. My favorite projects are stream restoration in the Golden Trout Wilderness and our Trout in the Classroom program. My favorite fishing spots are Nine Mile Creek in the Golden Trout Wilderness and my "sacred bass pond" on the San Diego River.
